Following the vision of Franco Moschini and his foundation the Cinema Teatro Piceno has been transformed into a cultural centre dedicated to the performance arts and renamed Politeama Piceno. It is a symbol for a town whose declining economy and recent earthquakes has brought suffering to its inhabitants. aMDL was asked to transform the interior of the theatre that had been abandoned for many years. This has been achieved by three main interventions: to create an atrium around the restoration of the original stairs with a overhead glazed roof and a panoramic lift, to remove the original theatre seating and stage to provide a large ground floor multi purpose space that can be sub divided for different activities and introduce an auditorium above, and to transform the basement levels into music rooms and changing facilities for the different users. The design seeks to maintain the historical character of the building with a careful restoration of the external facades and fresco decoration together with the recovery and physical expression of the original town wall foundations in the basement. The Politeama has been studied to provide the best acoustical conditions as well as offering a high standard of technical solutions.
